Costa del Sol lights up with markets, traditions and festive magic every Christmas, and Málaga becomes one of the most exciting destinations in Spain to experience the season. If you are visiting the city during this time of year, there are several experiences you simply cannot miss, both in Málaga and in the surrounding towns along the coast.
The spectacular Christmas lights in Málaga
Málaga’s Christmas lighting is a true spectacle and one of the city’s most iconic winter experiences. The official switch-on takes place on 28 November, when Calle Larios becomes a glowing tunnel of lights with music shows every evening at 6:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm (some special dates may vary, such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve). Plaza de la Constitución features a large Christmas tree perfect for festive photos, while nearby the Cathedral’s façade comes alive with a stunning video mapping show that adds even more magic to the city centre.
This year, Málaga also hosts a special Christmas drone show, with confirmed dates on 4, 6, 7 and 23 December at 8:00 pm, and an additional performance on 9 December at 8:30 pm. The light formations can be enjoyed from the port area, especially Palmeral de las Sorpresas and Muelle Uno.
Local tip: If you want to enjoy the lights with fewer crowds, visit on a weekday and arrive early for the first show, or choose the last performance at 10:00 pm when the streets tend to feel less busy.
Stela at the Botanical Garden
From 27 November to 8 January, the Málaga Botanical Garden (La Concepción) transforms during Christmas with “STELA, The Journey of the Star of the East”, a nighttime walk of around two kilometres filled with lights, set designs and landscapes inspired by Bethlehem and the East. It is an immersive experience, away from the bustle of the historic centre, and ideal to enjoy with family or as a couple in a peaceful, nature-filled environment.
Recommendation: wear comfortable shoes and book in advance for weekends and peak holiday dates.
Christmas Markets in Málaga and Marbella
Christmas markets bring a cosy charm to the season. In Málaga, the Muelle Uno market by the sea is a favourite thanks to its festive wooden stalls with crafts, decorations and seasonal treats. It is open daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, making it a perfect plan both during the day and in the evening after seeing the lights. The market at Parque de Málaga is also a classic among families, offering toys, sweets and local products.
At El Corte Inglés, the Christmas market runs from 28 November 2025 to 5 January 2026, open from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. If you head to Marbella, the Avenida del Mar Christmas market offers stalls, performances and children’s activities in the heart of the city.
Food tip: Try traditional Christmas sweets such as turrón, mantecados and local pastries — they are part of the Andalusian holiday tradition.
Electric Car Tour of Málaga’s Christmas Lights
For a comfortable and crowd-free way to explore the Christmas lights, electric car tours are a perfect option. These guided routes take you through key spots such as Calle Larios, Alameda Principal, Muelle Uno and Plaza de la Constitución in 100% electric vehicles designed for small groups. Along the way, the guide shares anecdotes and local Christmas traditions, offering a unique perspective on the city’s festive atmosphere.
Ideal for: families with children, travellers short on time, and anyone who wants to avoid long walks while still seeing Málaga’s highlights.
The Three Wise Men Parades on the Costa del Sol
On the evening of 5 January, the Costa del Sol fills with excitement as the Three Wise Men parades take over the streets. In Málaga, Their Majesties make their way through the city centre in a festive procession full of music, sweets and family atmosphere. In Fuengirola, the Kings arrive by helicopter at the Elola Sports Complex before beginning a lively parade with numerous floats and performers. Many other towns along the coast also host their own parades, making it easy to find one nearby to end the Christmas season with magic.
“The Enchanted Gardens” at Plaza Mayor
At Plaza Mayor shopping centre, “The Enchanted Gardens” offer a free walk through festive lights, decorative figures and a cheerful holiday atmosphere. During several weeks, from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, the gardens transform into a luminous landscape — perfect to combine with Christmas shopping, leisure and an outdoor evening stroll.
Tip: Arrive early (around 7:00 pm) if you want to take photos with fewer people.
Nativity Route
Málaga’s nativity scene tradition is rich and varied, making it easy to create your own Christmas route. The Municipal Nativity Scene at the Town Hall is among the most visited. The Cathedral hosts an impressive large-scale nativity scene in a majestic setting, while the Provincial Council presents one of the most spectacular displays, with hundreds of figures and meticulous details.
For something more original, the underwater nativity scene at Sea Life Benalmádena blends marine life with the nativity tradition, an especially charming plan for families with children.
