What is the San Juan Festival?
The Night of San Juan has its origins in ancient cultures that worshipped the sun as a source of life. The bonfires, the main feature of this celebration, symbolized purification and protection against evil forces. With the advent of Christianity, the date was adapted to commemorate the birth of Saint John the Baptist, cousin of Jesus of Nazareth, and considered the last prophet before Christ, who devoted himself to preaching the coming of the Messiah.
Traditions of San Juan’s Eve
This night is celebrated in different ways worldwide, but in Málaga, the tradition is that as night falls, bonfires are lit in squares, beaches, and streets. Around them, families and friends gather to share laughter, music, food, and wishes, and fireworks light up the sky. A very popular ritual is jumping over the flames to purify the body and attract good luck. The burning of “júas,” rag dolls representing famous characters, is also performed to ward off evil spirits. Traditional “espetadas,” a typical Andalusian dish consisting of sardines skewered and grilled over wood on the beach, are prepared.
THE SYMBOLISM OF WATER
In addition to fire, water also plays a significant role in this celebration. It is believed that bathing in the sea at midnight brings health and beauty, and some also take the opportunity to perform rituals such as placing a flower in water with the name of their beloved or writing wishes on a piece of paper and burning it for them to come true.
