Malaga, a benchmark for Christmas lights

Malaga at Christmas undergoes a magical transformation. Nationally and internationally recognised for its grand display of Christmas lights, this year, the city boasts 2.2 million LED lights spread throughout the city. Its main street, Calle Larios, becomes a real winter wonderland and the heart of the festive lighting, starring this year’s grand display of 16 heavenly angels with 12-metre tails that offer three daily light shows and Christmas music at 6.30 pm, 8.00 pm and 10.00 pm.

Malaga’s Cathedral will also be a star of the show with a special video mapping that will project images and giant stained-glass reproductions onto the architectural masterpiece. Don’t miss the Jardín Botánico Histórico La Concepción and its show ‘Angelical’, a journey that transports visitors to the 8 kingdoms of Christmas, the 73 nativity scenes scattered around the city, or the Christmas cocktail tour on the San Juan, San Telmo and Alcazaba terraces.

A visit to Mijas, a picturesque village nestled in the mountains, is a must if you wish to experience the most traditional Andalusian Christmas. Its cobbled streets are decorated with an array of Christmas lights and ornaments. The central square, the Plaza de la Constitución, comes alive with festive celebrations, live music and a Christmas spirit. From the 1st to the 17th of December, you can enjoy its charming Christmas market, where both neighbours and visitors alike can find handcrafted goods, sample local delicacies, and buy unique gifts for their loved ones.

For those who love music, the Banda de Música de Mijas will offer a concert in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña on the 16th of December at 7 pm. For the little ones, Father Christmas’ village will offer themed workshops with elves and festive characters in three locations around the town: the Parque de la Butibamba in La Cala, the Parque de Andalucía in Las Lagunas and the Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo.

Christmas in Marbella, glamour by the sea

The famous town of Marbella offers a unique Christmas experience along its renowned Puerto Banús. Brightly lit with festive lights, decorations and its renowned Christmas markets, the harbour provides an atmosphere of festive glamour and charm. From the 15th to the 24th of December, the youngest visitors can visit Santa’s Grotto, located on the Paseo de la Alameda, to deliver their letters to Father Christmas and his famous elves. For those who prefer to wait for the Three Wise Men, the Royal Postman’s House will be open at the same address from the 27th of December until the 5th of January.

Marbella is also the perfect place to do some last-minute Christmas shopping and find that special something in the luxury boutiques and designer shops on the Golden Mile.
